Aldo Saavedra

I build software that does real work: agents that plan and buy the groceries, and the guardrails that keep coding agents from wrecking a repo.

Now, October 2026: relaunching Freem with Axel, its grocery agent, and leading technical delivery at a mining exploration company in Santiago, Chile.

Short write-ups of what I learn building with agents. New notes most weeks.

Background

My roots are in Iquique, in Chile's far north. I spent fourteen years building data and software systems for the copper mining industry before moving into AI products. The column below works like a drill core sample: the most recent work is at the top, and the longer I stayed somewhere, the thicker the layer.

Building software
Data systems in mining operations
  1. 2025 to present

    EMSA, Codelco's exploration subsidiary, Santiago

    Technical Lead, Transformation & Technology

I joined to build analytics and was promoted after nine months to lead the technical side of the area. We build internal software end to end: an LLM-powered intake for new initiatives, an ML model that predicts drilling rates, and a team that now works agent-first.

  2. 2025

    Independent, Santiago

    AI Engineer

Six months as an independent AI engineer, taking proofs of concept to production for corporate clients. It is also when I started building Freem's agent.

  3. 2021 to 2025

    Teck Quebrada Blanca, Santiago

    Data & Systems Integration Engineer

Four years getting mine, plant, geoscience, lab and planning systems to share their data, as the technical counterpart to vendors like Caterpillar and Orica and to the corporate team in Canada.

  4. 2020 to 2021

    Capitalizarme, Iquique

    Full-Stack Engineer

Nine months on the engineering team of a real estate investment startup. I moved the back office to microservices on AWS, brought in typed code and CI/CD so changes could ship safely, and worked with sales and operations to turn their day-to-day needs into features.

  5. 2011 to 2020

    BHP, Cerro Colorado, Tarapacá

Data Analysis & Process Optimization Lead

Nine years at a copper mine in the Tarapacá desert, where I built the site's production reporting software and predictive models for copper cathode quality.

Studies

I started as an informatics technician at Universidad Arturo Prat in Iquique and went on to two years of computer engineering at INACAP. Later, while already working in mining, I earned a degree in risk prevention engineering, also at Universidad Arturo Prat. Data is what brought me back to computing: a big data diploma at Universidad Católica, MIT's Machine Learning Professional Program, an applied statistics diploma at Universidad de Concepción, and a diploma and a Master's in Data Science at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. Most recently, a diploma in IT project management at Universidad Católica.
